The article “Trump ‘torn’ over U.S-China trade deal as officials push to fulfill its terms” published by CNBC on May 8, 2020, talks about the U.S.-China trade deal that was signed to end the trade war between the U.S and China. The two countries have engaged in a trade war that started in 2018 and escalated in 2019. According to the article, President Donald Trump’s cabinet officials gave statements indicating that both parties in the trade agreement were committed to fulfilling their obligations promptly despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commerce Ministry in China shared similar sentiments indicating that the two sides were focusing on enhancing the atmosphere for the institution of Phase 1 of the trade deal. This implies that the U.S. will reduce the tariffs it imposed on Chinese products and services, while Beijing will increase the importation of agricultural and manufactured products and services from the United States.
Despite this progress, the article indicates that the U.S President showed intent to terminate Phase 1 of the trade deal his country signed with China in mid-February. In his statement, the President accused China of mishandling the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan in December 2019. President Trump attributed the thousands of job losses and deaths in the U.S to the mishandling of the disease by Chinese authorities.
