This unit examines nursing leadership and the safety and quality of patient care in the context of clinical nursing practice. Students will critically analyse contemporary leadership theories and their relevance and application to clinical nursing leadership. The unit also explores adverse events, risk management and continuous quality improvement in health care and focuses on the essential requirements to understand how to optimise patient safety and care quality.

    1. Critically analyse leadership and management theories relevant to nursing and their application to nursing practice
    2. Evaluate clinical leadership readiness and related skill sets of nurses in practice
    3. Explore and analyse the impact of nursing leadership and management to patient safety and care quality
    4. Discuss how clinical risk, near misses, errors and risk assessment and incident monitoring promote a culture of patient safety and care quality
    5. Analyse and apply risk management principles to identify, assess and report potential risks in healthcare delivery
    6. Critically analyse the components of governance within healthcare contexts in relation to patient safety and care quality
    7. Critique approaches and techniques for improving patient safety and care quality in contemporary nursing practice
    8. Critically examine risk management plans in service delivery for inclusion of concepts of safety, quality and clinical governance
    9. Critique the effectiveness of a range of continuous quality improvement strategies for the purpose of risk reduction in the clinical setting
    10. Formulate strategies to address an identified risk in health care delivery using a continuous quality improvement process.
