Complete the following required worksheet using the required article for the current session.  Access the required article from the assignment guidelines.

Purpose of the Study:  Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the purpose of the study.  Describe what the study is about.

The purpose of this study was to find which intervention can help reduce the occurrence of dry eyes in critically ill patients. The two lubricant eye drop interventions that were being studied were liquid artificial tears and artificial tears gel. Within the study they used two parallel groups which had to meet certain criteria in order to be used. Over time they collected data to draw a conclusion to indicate which intervention was the most effective in reducing the occurrence of dry eyes.

Research & Design:  Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the description of the type of research and the design of the study.  Include how it supports the purpose (aim or intent) of the study.

The type of research and design of the study included was a quantitative research. Quantitative research was utilized by conducting a double blind randomized controlled trial study with 2 parallel groups. The participants that were recruited had to meet certain criteria which determined the sample size of 140 patients. This number was broken down into two groups of 70 patients each. Over time they collected data to draw a conclusion to indicate which intervention was the most effective. Quantitative research helped streamline which intervention would be suitable for reducing ocular surface alterations because non-bias data was collected without any unconscious input from the healthcare team. Patients were excluded from the study if there were any data that would alter the course of the study.

Sample:  Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the population (sample) for the study; include key characteristics, sample size, sampling technique.

The population for this study men or women over the age of 18. They couldn’t have any diagnosis of dry eyes at ICU admission or receipt of any mechanical ventilation. Must have a blink rate of less than 5x per minute with a Glasgow coma scale score of 7 or lower (de Araujo et al,, 2019). Patients must also have an ICU stay of 48hrs or more or they would be excluded from the study.
