At the end of the Leadership and Communication course, you will write a four-part reflection paper. This paper will help you focus on your experience and insights from the course. This includes what you have experienced about your working style; how you work with others; insights you have gained regarding conversations and interactions you have with friends, family, coworkers, and others; and strategies you will use to improve your chances for success.
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide.
You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
A. Reflect on your experience in the Leadership and Communication course by doing the following:
1. Provide a brief overview of your understanding of your Energy Graph from the Learning Report, including two personal strengths and two personal challenges that relate to your working style.
Note: Consider discussing your intensity level (Extreme, Effortless, Deliberate, Stress) in your main dynamics—Explore, Excite, Examine, and Execute—and how they relate to your strengths and challenges.
2. Describe your experience(s) of conversations as they relate to the laws of conversation and the four levels of the conversation meter.
3. Discuss your strategies for being a successful student, including how you will incorporate your strengths and address your challenges.
4. Reflect on your overall experience in the course and how it applies to two of the following: academic activities, professional career, or personal life.
B. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
C. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

A. Reflect on your experience in the Leadership and Communication course by doing the following:
- Provide a brief overview of your understanding of your Energy Graph from the Learning Report, including two personal strengths and two personal challenges that relate to your working style.
My personal energy graph reflects:
Explore – I am deliberate when moving through this dynamic. This requires a conscious effort for me. Also, I do not require a full understanding of the larger picture in order to initiate action toward an ultimate goal. This dynamic centers on the question, “How?”
Excite – My naturally dominant dynamic. I tend to bring enthusiasm to projects with a focus on human connection. This dynamic centers on the question, “Who?”
Examine – I will engage in research or detail orientation only when necessary. This dynamic centers on the question, ”Why?”
Execute – Centering on plan implementation, this requires a conscious intention toward task completion. This dynamic centers on the question, “What?”
Evaluate – An unquantified dynamic, this characteristic’s intention is toward reflection on success and satisfaction, or goals achieved vs. feelings of fulfillment.
The energy type I most identify with, reflected in the “excite” work style, is extreme. I believe everyone moves through the work types and energy types, although there are clearly those naturally prescribed dominant energies. Mother Nature, in her wisdom or lack thereof, rolled the proverbial dice and bestowed upon me Excite as the dominant energy. That has pros and cons. Pros: I am naturally gregarious and have no trouble being heard and many times influential. Another strength is that often others look to me as a leader as it is natural for me to bring the team together. Cons: Although I have a voice that others recognize, haste has been known to override prudent decision making. The natural drive to accomplish tasks swiftly has sometimes left details overlooked. That has been known to boomerang and lead me to perform tasks more than once. Also, a personal challenge is spending more time on creating a cohesion among peers vs. moving toward task completion.
- Describe your experience(s) of conversations as they relate to the laws of conversation and the four levels of the conversation meter.
The conversation meter tends, in my experience, to reflect phases of conversation that result from one’s point of reference or intent. For example, if someone is afraid to lose something or afraid they will not gain something wanted, it is not uncommon to use pretense, or to be inauthentic. I think the approach one takes in conversation is as important of the content of the conversation. There is an appropriate time for sincerity in the form of brutal honesty, the next phase of the meter.
